GUIDELINES FOR HEALTHY EATING

Variety is the key to eating well. By having a variety of foods, you will be achieving a better eating style and you will receive the fifty nutrients needed to ensure a healthy and energetic you!

Choose cereals and whole grain breads. Eat vegetables and fruits, thereby increasing your carbohydrates, fibres, vitamins and minerals and at the same time decreasing your fats and calories. Fibres are indigestible parts of plants, which aid in elimination. Having fibre in your diet appears to protect against certain forms of cancer and helps with the reduction of blood cholesterol.

The following are additional useful points:
  • Choose leaner cuts of meat, eat smaller portions, and choose dairy products with a lower fat content.
  • Eating less fat ensures controlling your cholesterol level and reducing your risk of heart disease and certain types of cancer.
  • Achieve and maintain a healthy body weight with regular exercise, such as a daily walk. This will also relieve stress and you will feel much better emotionally at the beginning or end of your 'busy' day.
  • Limit the use of salt, taste your food before adding it. Experiment with herbs and seasonings, to add taste to your meals.
  • Enjoy coffee, tea, soft drinks, and alcohol in moderation.
